Mobile Augmented Reality Impact in Student Engagement: an Analysis of the Focused Attention Dimension

2018
The current paper proposes the conduction of an investigation using sensors to measure the signals emitted by a student's brain during their interaction with educational technologies. The intention is to primarily demonstrate the difference in the subjects' focused attention levels while firstly interacting with a Virtual Learning Environment commonly used in teaching and subsequently with an alternative and upcoming concept in education: Mobile Augmented Reality, not yet perceived as usual in the classroom. A series of tests with actual students were conducted in order to pursue this investigation. The protocol followed in such tests and its results are exposed. Following this, the reasons why students demonstrated an average higher level of attention when interacting with educational resources in Augmented Reality when compared to the conventional Virtual Learning Environment are also discussed.
