Analysis of Serum IL-18 Expression Level in Patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and the Related Factors

2012
Objective To explore the serum interleukin (IL)-18 expression level in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and the correlation with various hormone index and metabolic indices. Methods 30 cases of PCOS patients were selected as experimental group, and 25 cases of women at normal reproductive age as control group; On the 3 rd day of the menstrual period, serum was isolated from fasting venous blood to determine the serum luteinizing hormone (LH), total testosterone (TT) and follicular erythropoietin (FSH) levels by the electrochemical luminescence immune method, at the same time testing fasting insulin (Insulin) and fasting blood sugar (FBG) levels, insulin resistance index (IR); and serum IL-18 level was tested by ELISA. Results Body mass index (BMI) between the two groups showed significant difference (P 0.05); The Insulin, HOMA-IR and TT, LH/FSH in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P 0.05); plasma IL-18 level in the experimental group was obviously higher than that in the control group (P 0.05). IL-18 level in the experimental group was positively associated with serum Insulin, HOMA-IR and TT, LH/FSH, correlation coefficient r value was 0.43, 0.38, 0.42 and 0.40 (P 0.05). Conclusions Plasma IL-18 level in PCOS patients significantly increases, and serum IL-18 has a significant positive correlation with Insulin, HOMA-IR, TT and LH/FS, which indicates the important significance of IL-18 in PCOS.
