Advantages of nonlinear RZ over NRZ on 10 Gb/s single-span links

Transmission limits of return-to-zero (RZ) and non-return-to-zero (NRZ) coding are experimentally demonstrated and confirmed by simulation. Power budgets of 60 dB are achieved using either format, however RZ has higher dispersion tolerance. We conclude on a simple explanation of the observed differences.
