Introduction and objective: regular consumption of certain foods, the reduction of sodium intake, fats and sugars, the regular practice of physical activity and the good life habits are essential to prevent and/or normalize arterial hypertension. The article aimed to evaluate the food consumption and the habits of hypertensive patients treated in an outpatient clinic of nutrition in the municipality of Pelotas-RS. Materials and Methods: Analysis of secondary data from the medical records. The variables analyzed were body mass index, waist, neck circumference, Conicity Index, food consumption, variation in weight, percentage of weight loss, life habits (smoking, alcoholism, sedentary lifestyle) and associated pathologies. Statistical analyzes were performed in Stata® 12, with a significance level of 5%. Discussion: The results are like studies with hypertensive. Results: The majority of patients presented overweight, sedentary lifestyle and values above the recommended levels of anthropometric measurements but was an increase in the consumption of fruits and vegetables, milk and derivatives, integrals, water, and reduction of foods rich in sodium. Conclusion: Good habits of life and adequate food consumption are fundamental in the treatment of hypertensive patients, aiming at the improvement of symptoms and prevention of comorbidities.
