The culture at JCB, from its conception, has been epitomised by the Company motto which is 'Jamais Content' and as such, in the 1980s, when times were very good and all-time records were being broken, JCB were still very conscious of its weaknesses and areas it needed to address. Here, the author outlines such a study at JCB, and describes how, as they analysed their current performance, they were aware that teamwork and problem-solving had to be improved and the tremendous latent potential of their staff had to be tapped even further. Initially, their thoughts were to address these two areas of problem-solving and teambuilding with extensive training. However it soon became apparent that these were only a part of an overall quality issue which needed attention. >
