Effective Strategies for the Early Recognition of Maternal Hemorrhage

2000
Results: Before the start of the program, 0% of the Labor and Delivery Nurses had knowledge in quantification of EBL. As a result of the program, all Labor and Delivery Nurses are knowledgeable in quantifying EBL. At the start of the educational program 40% of all post-partum hemorrhages had an EBL less than 2000ml. Since the development of the education for staging levels of hemorrhage and execution of the new practice of quantifying EBL, 75% of all post-partum hemorrhages had an EBL less than 2000 ml. Conclusions and Implications: Through a strong educational program, evidence-based care for post-partum hemorrhage was incorporated into practice. These new practice changes give nurses a new role in the management of post-partum hemorrhage and help staff to recognize and manage post-partum hemorrhage in the early stage, thereby limiting the later stages. Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation the participants will be able to: • Identify strategies that assist with the early detection of post-partum hemorrhage. • Identify the role of nurses in achieving an accurate estimated blood loss in deliveries.
