The possibility to use the Wurtz-Grignard reaction for 3,3',4,4'-tetramethylbiphenyl synthesis, which is the starting compound for the 3,3',4,4'-tetracarboxy-1,1'-biphenyl dianhydride preparation, has been studied. It has been established that it is necessary to conduct the process in two stages, using THF as a solvent at the first stage and a mixture of benzene and THF at the second stage, for the high yield of the desired product.
