Jordan: Quotas and Change in Women’s Political Representation

2019
In this chapter, Bush provides an overview of women’s political representation in Jordan. Situating the overview within a general discussion of authoritarian politics, Bush discusses women’s right to run for political office and patterns in women’s representation over time. The chapter pays special attention to debates about gender quotas in Jordan. An exploration of what kinds of women get elected to political office and the contours of public opinion towards women’s representation sheds light on questions about the impact of women’s political presence. Bush concludes by suggesting directions for future research on women and politics in Jordan.
