In the long controversy over the choice of technique in the surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) certain aspects are now accepted, thanks to the development of investigations of gastroesophageal function, particularly manometry and pH measurement [15] and to the early results of controlled studies [8,12,14,17] evaluating the efficacy of the more commonly employed techniques in the short- and mid-term.
