Thin ribbons as internal targets in storage rings

Abstract We have made thin ribbon targets out of carbon and gold foils and tested them with 95 MeV α particles, 40 MeV oxygen ions and with protons of 150 and 300 MeV in the SATURNE ring. A short description of the fabrication of the targets is given. They were found to be very stable and easy to handle. The tests have shown that they can be used as internal targets in storage rings. The observed beam loss corresponds well with the results of Monte Carlo simulation calculations.
