STUDIES ON GABA-MONOAMINE AND GABA-ENDORPHIN INTERACTIONS

The present study shows the existence of exitatory and inhibitory GABAergic influences on ascending dopamine pathways and tuberoinfundibular DA neurons. Studies on GABA turnover indicate that overfunction of DA systems can increase GABA turnover in dopamine rich regions an action which involves a cholinergic link. Evidence has been obtained that β-endorphin can increase GABA turnover in the substantia nigra and the nucleus caudatus, indicating the existence of interaction between endorphin and GABA containing neurons in the extrapyramidal system.
