Transmigration potential in Indonesia.

1976
With the goal of assisting the Indonesian government in developing an effective transmigration policy a study was made of the causes and consequences of Indonesians willingness and unwillingness to migrate from Java to less densely populated areas of Indonesia. For the survey a multistage sampling technique was used. The sample design focuses on the population of Java between the ages of 16 and 40 nd the number of individuals interviewed was 3000. Data were developed that related religion family and community involvement economic status and aspirations and demographic variables to migration behavior and attitudes. It was found that: 1) about 14% of all respondents are willing to transmigrate; 2) there is a positive relationship between awareness of transmigration and willingness to transmigrate; 3) residents of Jakarta are more willing to transmigrate than residents of any other area; 4) a greater proportion of the residents of rural areas are unwilling to transmigrate than urban residents; 5) males are more willing to transmigrate than females; 6) there is an inverse relationship be tween age and willingness to transmigrate; and 8) unmarried are more willing to transmigrate than married. On the basis of the analyses it is concluded that there is a rather large population of potential transmigrants living in Java and that the most effective means of increasing transmigration would be to increase the entire populations awareness of the program. A trial transmigration program is recommended among those individuals who share such characteristics as higher education recent migration to Jakarta and age under 30.
