Hemp, jute, banana, kenaf, ramie, sisal fibers

Abstract Plant fibers are a popular choice today in composite manufacturing for several industrial applications. Based on their sustainability, plant fibers such as hemp, jute, sisal, kenaf, banana, and ramie fibers are replacing synthetic fibers in increasing numbers of fiber-reinforced composites. The chemical compositions and physical properties of each of the fibers are different, which demands a detailed comparison of these fibers. The reinforcing capabilities of plant fibers and their properties have been described in numerous papers. Today, high-performance plant fiber–based biocomposites have been produced after several years of research which show their potential. Plant fibers, particularly the fibers extracted from the bast and leaf of particular plants, find applications in automotive industries while most of the other fibers being studied at the research level and have yet to find large-scale commercial applications.
