Incertae Sedis VIII. Tectibacter

Tec.ti.bac' ter. L. masc. n. tectum covering; M.L. masc. n. bacter the equivalent of Gr. neut. n. bactrum a rod; M.L masc. n. Tectibacter the bacterium with a covering. Proteobacteria / Alphaproteobacteria / Rickettsiales / Holosporaceae / incertae Sedis VIII. Tectibacter Straight rods 0.4–0.7 × 1–2 µm. Distinguished by outer covering around its cell wall, visible in sections with the transmission electron microscope. Sparsely flagellated, peritrichous. No known strains are toxic to protozoa. Gram negative. Often observed to be motile. Occur widely among strains of Paramecium primaurelia, P. biaurelia, P. tetraurelia, P. sexaurelia, and P. octaurelia, often with other symbionts (Figure 1). Type species: Tectibacter vulgaris (ex Preer, Preer and Jurand 1974) Preer and Preer 1982, 140. Keywords: Incertae Sedis VIII. Tectibacter; Tectibacter vulgaris; Holosporaceae fam. nov.
