Modeling and Verification of a Parasitic Nonlinear Energy Storage Effect Due To High-Power Electromagnetic Excitation

2020
The analysis of nonlinear effects in electromagnetic compatibility can reveal unexpected system behavior. This article examines the response of nonlinearly loaded receiving structures with respect to high-power electromagnetic pulses. It is observed that induced voltages may exhibit dc components, which are retained after the decay of the usual transient oscillations. These dc components are attributed to stored electric field energy and can considerably be increased by the application of several pulses. This a priori surprising effect can both be predicted by modeling and confirmed by measurement.
