A survey on health-promoting lifestyle among community-dwelling older people with hypertension in Macau

Objective It aimed to investigate health-promoting lifestyle among community-dwelling elderly people with hypertension in Macau and the associations of their lifestyles and socio-demographics. Methods One hundred and nineteen patients were conveniently recruited from 10 community centres for the elderly in Macau. The researcher used the questionnaire to conduct face-to-face interview with each Patient for data collection. Results The patients' health-promoting lifestyle scores ranged between 73 and 181. Out of 119 patients, 61.3% had unhealthy lifestyle. More male patients(70%) had unhealthy lifestyle than female patients (59.6%) (χ2=0.760,P=0.045) and the patients with advanced age were more likely to have unhealthy lifestyle (t=2.103,P=0.038). Conclusions In order to control blood pressure of Macau elderly people in the community more effectively,we need to further explore critical factors affecting their health-promoting lifestyle for designing evidence-based health interventions.
