Radar Plotting Including Collision Avoidance

2014
A main function of the radar is to provide data to assist the navigator in collision avoidance. Because the data obtained is intrinsically relative to ‘Own Ship’,it is essential to obtain the TRUE nature of encounters in order to apply the Collision Regulations. This was originally graphical and manual and although, to-day it is automated, much of this section, this section is included as these are the principles upon which all the computer calculations are based. Indeed professional navigators are still req Common misconceptions are depicted and a number of case studies are included. The importance of determining the current situation is essential but as important are the consequences of any action taken by ‘own ship’ and possible action by the target. Graphical displays to assist the navigator in deciding what action to take are covered. Manoeuvres in tide are discussed. The consequences of errors in input data are considered. Older plotting technologies including reflection plotters, ATA and EPA, which are no longer fitted, are included for completeness.
