Idea and Derivation of the Method

2021
The first chapter introduces to major idea and mathematical background of the finite difference method. It is shown that a partial differential equation can be approximated by a Taylor’s series expansion of a certain order. As a result, forward, backward, centered difference schemes are obtained and the involved error due to truncated series is quantified. The nodal or grid point based approach is illustrated for one-dimensional problems.
