Acetabularfractures--Open reduction and internal fixation versus total hip arthroplasty

2005
:These case series onopen reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) suggest thatthe type of surgery may not strongly affect the clinical outcome among patients. However, complications such as heterotopic ossification may be increased among ORIF patientscompared to THA patients.Differences in study populations, especially age, may influencethe outcome independent of the treatment. Studies evaluating THA involved older patientson average than ORIF studies, making conclusions regarding treatment superiorityimpractical. A randomized control trial might be warranted to provide more conclusiveresults on this topic. Key words: Acetabular;  Fracture;  Internal fixation;  Arthoplasty, replacement, hip
