The Dynamic Behavior of the Middle or Side Impact Loaded 3-Point Bend Specimen

1991
Computer simulations of the mechanical behavior of a three point bend specimen with a quarter notch under impact load are performed. Two different cases are considered, namely load application at the side points and at the middle point. An elastic-plastic von Mises material model is chosen. Three phases are identified during the period from impact until estimated time for crack initiation. During the first two phases, the dynamic behavior is markedly influenced by inertia. The plastic zone near the crack tip emerges in the second phase and the plastic hinge forms in the third phase, at the end of which a quasi static state is reached.
