GSM passive radar: Range resolution improvement using data-dependent non parametric approach

2014
This paper investigates the application of a non- parametric data-dependent mismatched filtering method in GSM based passive radar systems. The Iterative Adaptive Approach for Amplitude and Phase Estimation algorithm (IAA-APES) is applied and its performance is compared to the Matched Filtering (MF) method. IAA-APES is adapted to the passive radar estimation task and a comparison in terms of range resolution and SNR loss is performed using simulated data. I. INTRODUCTION GSM based passive radar or passive coherent location (PCL) systems became very attractive due to the vast availability of potential transmitters. These illuminators of opportunity can be exploited for detection and tracking of moving targets in several applications (maritime, airborne and on ground). The experimental system GAMMA2 designed by Fraunhofer FKIE has proven the feasibility of such a technology (1), (2). The presented system comprises all the different processing blocks from the antenna to the tracker as indicated in Fig. 1. GAMMA2 was successfully tested for maritime surveillance tasks at the Baltic Sea (2).
