Adapting to the unexpected

When I sat down to consider the topic for this issue, it was January 2020 and the number of people affected by the strange pneumonia-like illness being reported in Wuhan could still be written with two figures, rather than the current eight. I wanted to choose a topic that would be relevant to those with an interest in primary or secondary care, something with thought provoking ethical and legal issues, something that would be important across different life stages. I also wanted the topic to be enticing enough for people to want to pick up the issue and read—and so the sex issue of BMJ Student was launched.
