The Risk Management Handbook for Health Professionals

2003
The book is organized in an engaging and readable format, with the majority of chapters dedicated to medical specialties or distinct audiences (eg residents, nurses, chiropractors), with particular emphasis on procedures and practices of greatest risk in these specialties. For instance, in internal medicine you would find that the top five missed diagnoses (the most common type of malpractice claim) are: first, lung cancer; second, acute myocardial infarction; third, colorectal cancer; fourth, breast cancer; and fifth, pulmonary embolism. A potential problem with this format is that a clinician might only read relevant chapter relevant to him/her, and skip over the general chapters pertaining to legal and technical aspects of risk management from which every clinician could benefit.
