FULL-SCALE TEST ON PAVEMENT DESIGN

IN A FULL-SCALE TEST COMPARISONS HAVE BEEN MADE OF MEASURED STRESSES AND STRAINS IN A FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT AND THE CORRESPONDING CALCULATED STRESSED AND STRAINS DETERMINED ON BASIS OF ELASTIC THEORY. THE THREE EXPERIMENTAL SECTIONS OF ROAD CONSISTED OF 12, 16 AND 19 CM RESPECTIVELY OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE PLACED ON 30CM OF MECHANICALLY STABILIZED GRAVEL UNDERLAIN BY SAND AND A SANDY SUBGRADE. STRESSES AND STRAINS WERE MEASURED OVER A WIDE RANGE OF WHEEL LOADS, SPEEDS AND TEMPERATURES. CALCULATED VALUES WERE DETERMINED ON THE BASIS OF E-VALUES OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE FOUND IN A BENDING-APPARATUS AND E-VALUES OF GRAVEL, SAND AND SUBGRADE FOUND BY STATIC AND DYNAMIC PLATE-BEARING TESTS. A POISSON VALUE OF 0,4 WAS USED. RESULTS OF THE FIRST TESTS (AUTUMN 68/WINTER 69) SHOWED THAT MEASURED STRAIN WAS CONSIDERABLY GREATER THAN CALCULATED STRAIN AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE, WHEREAS IN THE LATER TESTS, STRAIN WAS LESS THAN CALCULATED STRAIN. FOR VERTICAL STRESS AT THE TOP OF THE GRAVEL AND AT THE TOP OF THE SAND MEASURED VALUES WERE MAINLY IN GOOD AGREEMENT WITH CALCULATED VALUES. MEASURED VERTICAL STRESS AT THE SUBGRADE WAS ALWAYS LESS THAN CALCULATED.
