Canonical analysis between mental health and coping style variables of middle school students

2010
Objective To explore the relationship between mental health variables and coping style variables of middle school students, and to provide the basis on mental health education for middle school students. Methods Using stratified random cluster sampling,1584 middle school students were selected to undergo the Mental Health Inventory of Middle School Students and the CopingStyle Scale for Middle School Students, and the relationship between mental health and coping style of the students was analyzed with the method of canonical analysis. Results The first canonical correlation coefficient was 0.648(P0.01),whose cumulative percentage was 71.826%.For the coping style variables,U1 loaded heavily on abreaction(-0.866),denial and fantasy(-0.794),restraint(-0.545),and escape(-0.552).For the mental health variables,V1 loaded well on all the ten factors. Conclusion The canonical analysis indicated that the more emotionally the students coped, the poor the mental health status of the students were.Mental health education of middle school students should focus on training their coping skills, especially on reforming the negative emotion-focused coping.
