Role of acquired and inherited Prothrombotic Risk Factors in Pediatric Cerebral Venous Thrombosis — Preliminary Results of a Multicenter Case-Control Study

2002
Venous thrombosis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in adult and pediatric patients, and cerebral venous thrombosis is a serious but relatively uncommon diagnosis in children (1, 3, 4, 15–17, 19). It has been associated with underlying systemic conditions, such as dehydration, sepsis, systemic lupus erythematosus, homocystinuria, Behcet disease, acute lymphoblastic leukemia and vascular trauma (8). In addition, various genetic defects of proteins regulating blood coagulation have been discussed as risk factors for cerebral venous thrombosis in childhood (1, 10).
