Relationship between Family Typology and Quality of Life in Postoperative Early-stage Breast Cancer Patients

2009
Objective:To study family typology status of postoperative early-stage breast cancer patients and its relationship with Quality of Life(QOL),and to offer basic reference for family intervention. Methods:A total of 196 postoperative early-stage breast cancer patients were investigated with the Family Cohesion and Adaptability Questionnaire, the second Edition of Chinese Edition(FACESⅡ-CV)and EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire,Breaot Cancer 53(EORTC QLQ-BR53)for their family typology proportion and QOL.Results:Compared with normal group, the ratios of extremity type family(29.6 % vs.16.4%)and middle family type(39.8% vs.29.5%)were increased in patients with breast cancer, and equilibrium family type(30.6% vs.54.1%)were decreased(χ2= 18.028,P0.01).The scores of global health status were higher in extremity type families than in middle and equilibrium type families [(70.0±19.6)vs.(61.0±19.8),(57.4±18.0);P0.01].But the scores of systematic therapy side effects [(20.7±17.1)vs.(27.1±14.7),(28.9±16.0);P0.05] and fatigue [(23.2±20.5)vs.(29.3±15.2),(32.8±18.2);P0.01] were lower in extremity type families than in middle and equilibrium type families. The scores of nausea and vomiting were lower in extremity type families than in equilibrium type families [(5.5±13.7)vs.(11.7±19.0);P0.05].Family typology was an important related factor to global health status(β=0.252)and systematic therapy side effects(β=-0.183)in breast cancer patients. Conclusion:In postoperative early-stage breast cancer patients, the ratios of extremity and middle family type are increased and equilibrium family type decreased.Family typology is an important factor to QOL of breast cancer patients. The QOL of breast cancer patients in extremity type families is higher than that in middle and equilibrium type families.Intervention should be offered to families of breast cancer patients, guiding the conversion of family typology from other types to extremity.
