IHEP DRIFT TUBE PROTOTYPE FOR ATLAS

Abstract A drift chamber prototype for the muon system of the ATLAS detector has been prepared and tested with a muon beam at CERN. The mechanical accuracy for the sense wire positions was measured with X-ray tomography (the rms is better than 33 μm). An ArCO 2 N 2 CF 4 gas mixture (95%−2%−2%−1%) at an absolute pressure of 3 atm was used. Spatial resolutions σ = 80 μ m ( U s = 3400 V) and σ = 60 μ m ( U s = 3500 V) were achieved.
