Applications of Linear Optimization to Concept Vehicle Safety Structures

The purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate the potential advantages of introducing linear optimization techniques into the early design stages of a concept vehicle with an emphasis on safety structures. The chapter will thereby combine the analytical and numerical analysis techniques highlighted in Chapters 1 and 2 with the theoretical optimization principles introduced in Chapters 3 and 4. This will be done in a “practical” sense, as the chapter will focus on a case study employing both commercial and “tailor” made software to emphasize the potential advantages as well as highlighting the limitations and potential for further improvement of the optimization process.
