On the throughput of random multihop packet radio networks using receiver directed CDMA

The authors present a receiver directed code division multiple access (CDMA) scheme for use in multihop packet radio networks. This scheme takes advantage of the inherent multiple-access capabilities of spread-spectrum anti jam communications systems to allow efficient channel sharing and thus achieves a significant increase in network throughput. They first derive an analytical upper bound on average network throughput for random networks with uniform message traffic, assuming that the network is homogeneous. A slotted ALOHA-like access protocol is then developed, using code division to address only the desired receiver, in conjunction with a simple minimum-hop routing algorithm. Simulation results are presented which agree quite closely with the predicted throughput over a wide range of input conditions. >
