Educating film buffs or students? The different uses of film in the French Lycéens et apprentis au cinéma education programme

The main aim of the French Lyceens et apprentis au cinema (Secondary school at the movies) education programme is to change the way that young people approach cinema. It would appear, however, that it is teachers who are transmitting information about the cinematic arts rather than experts. Consequently, the question might be asked whether these teachers, whose concerns are largely academic ones, are educating film buffs or students. More widely, this paper questions the idea that arts in schools can necessarily change the nature of education. Based on observations, the study shows that artistic approaches have only a minimal impact on teaching methods.
