Manufacture of copper clad nb-ti alloy wire

1978
PURPOSE: To manufacture titled wire possessing the strict specified cladding rate of Cu/Nb-Ti, by preparing the composite blank through inserting the Nb-Ti alloy core wire into the copper pipe, etc., by drawing this composite blank through the dies of the specified overall angle, and then, by applying the area reduction drawing to the blank. CONSTITUTION: The composite blank, prepared by inserting the Nb-Ti alloy core wire 3 into the copper pipe or copper alloy pipe 4, is drawn by the dies 1 possessing overall angle 2α specified to 30W70 degrees, pressing the core wire 3 so as to hardly deform it. If the overall angle 2α is smaller than 30 degrees, the core wire 3 causes deformation, and if 2α is larger than 70 degrees, the surface condition becomes worse. Next, the blank is drawn for area reduction through the dies 2 provided with overall angle 2α specified to 5W12 degrees. Hereupon, if 2α is smaller than 5 degrees, the drawing force increases due to the friction force, and if 2α is larger than 12 degrees, the cladding rate decreases owing to the irregular deformation of the alloy. The reduction of area is desired to be about 15W20%. According to this method, the titled wire with strict specified cladding rate suitable for the superconductor for the magnet employed in the nuclear fusion process, etc., can be manufactured.
