Mary Cassandra Elkington and the Lindsays

2011
Mary Elkington was the first president of Scribblers, a ladies literary society formed in 1911 in Brisbane. She suggested the formation of a group most likely modelled on the Hobart society, the Hamilton Literary Society. It is not known who drew up the invitation list for the first meetings but Mary Elkington was sure to have had a hand in it to make certain that the right people were included - not only because of their talent but also because of their social status. She was not lacking in either department and, by all accounts, she was a very strong minded lady. She was president until her death in 1925.
