The optic and magnetic properties of very thin electrolytic Co and Ni films

Abstract Using an in situ magneto-optic technique information has been obtained about the optic and magnetic properties of very thin electrodeposited Co and Ni films. The results show different behaviour for the first deposited layers than for the rest of the material. This suggests that they have different electronic structures. Magnetic order was not observed in the first deposited layers of either Co or Ni. A qualitative explanation of the phenomenon is put forward which could be compatible with other recent experimental results. By using monochromatic light, the technique employed promises to be an efficient source of information on the causes that motivate the different behaviour observed.
