Redox-chemiluminescence of the Eu3+* ion and Xe* atom generated in the solid-phase interaction of EuSO4 and ХеF2
2017
Abstract The new chemiluminescence (CL) in solid-phase interaction of powders EuSO 4 (or Eu 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ) with ХеF 2 at room temperature was found. The CL for EuSO 4 is studied in more detail and is the first example of the oxidation of the Ln 2+ ions by ХеF 2 and the solid-phase CL of the divalent lanthanide ions. The CL and IR spectra as well the photoluminescence (PL) emission and excitation spectra and also the lifetimes of the excited Eu 2+ * and Eu 3+ * ions in the starting EuSO 4 and in the solid reaction product FEuSO 4 have been measured for the first time. The second stable product of the reaction Xe atoms has been identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The Eu 3+ * ions are a dominant emitters of the CL (~ 90% of the total emission) and emit the red light (λ max = ~ 608 and ~ 705 nm) and the second weak CL emitters are Xe* atoms (λ max = 475 nm). Possible mechanism generation of new direct and indirect CL in the interaction of EuSO 4 with ХеF 2 has been proposed in the paper.
