Power Measurement Framework for LPWAN IoT

2021
The Internet of Things (IoT) is predicted to experience massive growth in the coming years, with the capability of utilizing wireless communications to transfer sensor and actuator information from those hard-to-access locations. To enable large-scale IoT deployment, low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) has attracted a lot of research attention both from academia and industries. The design objectives of LPWAN technologies are low-power consumption, wide-area coverage, and low cost. This chapter is focused on the power modelling of one specific LPWAN technology, namely, Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT). An empirical power consumption model based on measurements for NB-IoT device battery lifetime estimation is presented. The proposed model is validated via real measurements with different coverage scenarios and traffic configurations. The resulting estimated battery lifetime is promising, showing that the 10-year battery lifetime requirement specified by 3GPP can be met with proper configuration of traffic profile and transmission parameters.
