A New Fault Location Method for Single Phase to Ground Faults in the Small Current Neutral Grounding System

2009
A new fault location method for single phase to ground faults is proposed based on the wide-area synchronizing information. The method is based on the line model of distributed parameters in the small current neutral grounding system, and establishes a fault location function according to the relationships between the fault current and fault distance, which requires synchronized samples of currents and voltages from the two ends of a line. With each assumed fault distance,a corresponding fault current can be obtained. And the maximum fault current can be obtained using the iterative search algorithm along the whole line, the distance corresponding to the maximum fault current is the fault distance.Simulation results and field experiments show that the method is reliable and accurate and can be used for other types of faults.
