Fossil fuel is defined as “a natural fuel such as coal or gas formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms” [1]. In this chapter we are going to focus on its solid form, coal, “a black or dark brown rock consisting chiefly of carbonized plant matter, found mainly in underground seams and used as fuel” [2].
