[Comparative cytological and histological studies after treatment with an estrogen-progesterone combination to suppress ovulation (Ovosiston)]
1968
Vaginal smears were taken from a total of 213 women 20-53 years of age who used the oral contraceptive (o.c.) Ovosiston for 3(80 women) 6(80 women) or 9(53 women) months. The results were compared to those from a control group of 80 women taken before o.c. use. The results were collated according to the age of the patient and the reason for o.c. use (as a contraceptive to control bleeding or to treat menopauseal disorders). In ca. 2% of the cases there were indications that ovulation had taken place in spite of correct o.c. use. In 25 cases histological sections were taken at various intervals during the first and second treatment cycles in addition to the vaginal smears. There was a good correspondence between the results of the vaginal and endometrial studies. There were no great deviations in the results of the vaginal tests which could be related to the length of Ovosiston use or the age of the patients. Very few "suspect" and no "clearly suspect" smears were observed during the study. (Summaries in ENG FRE)
