The Effects of Various Wavelengths on Algae Growth

2018
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants convert light into energy to power processes in the plant. Light is a major reactant of photosynthesis, and different wavelengths of light have different effects on the production of photosynthesis. We hypothesized that when water is exposed to different colored wavelengths, the most algae growth will occur in the blue light because it has the most energy and will be able to best penetrate the water and provide light to the cells. In order to test this, we utilized three groups, a control group with of water from the Hefner Golf course, and two experimental groups with blue and red food coloring added to the water. Our hypothesis was not supported as the algae in the blue sample decreased, while it increased in the control group and experimental group.
