The propagation of an elastic manifold (front, interface, field) in a heterogeneous medium, described through a random interaction potential, can de described generically as a “depinning transition”. Considered as a homogenization problem, this phenomenon gives rise an original set of questions regarding the random interaction potential. In the strong pinning regime, the potential inevitably presents discontinuities. The effective potential seen by a subpart of the system incorporates both features of the local random potential, and the elasticity of the manifold.
