Functional Changes in Polymorphonuclear Leukocyte Function Following Severe Polytraumatization

1991
The role of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) in the pathogenesis of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is widely, although not universely, accepted. ARDS by definition is progressive respiratory distress with hypoxemia following pulmonary dysfunction [1–5]. This situation regularly requires mechanical ventilation. In roentgenograms a so-called white lung is seen based on interstitial edema and fibrosis. Mortality is high and in the range of 80%. This complication is often seen as a consequence of severe polytrauma.
