Development of National Flood Monitoring System (NFMS RG ) based on Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques

Concept of the National Flood Monitoring System (NFMS) developed by SPARRSO is presented. The concept of the NFMS is being implemented under four thematic areas: flood areas, population affected, flood damage, flood early warning. Presently, the NFMS is using a GIS framework to generate flood map and flood area statistics quickly from satellite data. Work is going on to generate a perennial flood data layer to be integrated with the GIS framework to provide flood map and flood area statistics on gross and extended terms. Techniques for estimation of population affected by flood and crop damaged by it have been developed addressing the specific conditions in Bangladesh. Generation of GIS background datasets needed to apply the techniques operationally is continuing.
