The contributions of Mexican scientists to contraceptive research and development.

1994
In the area of contraceptive development Mexico has contributed much to the research in human reproduction. Scientifically-based research in this field emerged early in the 20th century. In the 1950s a group of young Mexican investigators were able to produce the first synthetic steroid compounds with potent progestational activity. This was followed by an intense period of clinical research in reproductive endocrinology and contraceptive development. After the introduction of combined hormonal contraceptives the efficacy of a novel type of estrogen and progestin therapy for the inhibition of ovulation was assessed which subsequently led to the development of the mini-pill concept. Attention was then turned to research into long-acting injectable contraceptives to assess safety and effectiveness and to develop new agents and strategies. Although the main approach to contraceptive research and development in Mexico has been endocrinologically focused Mexican scientists have made a number of contributions in intrauterine contraception and sterilization. These developments are continuing in Mexico giving hope that Mexican scientists will be able to make further important and substantial contributions in this field.
