Karyotypes of Barbus canis and Capoeta damascina (Pisces, Cyprinidae) from the Middle East

Abstract The karyotypes of two cyprinid species Barbus canis and Capoeta damascina (Cyprinidae) from the Middle East were studied. For both species, consistent modes of diploid numbers were found to be 148–150 chromosomes. The number of chromosome arms was also similar and ranged from 224 in B. canis to 228 for C. damascina. The chromosome sets of B. canis and C. damascina can be grouped into morphologically homomorphic sextets, suggesting that the currently available list of hexaploid species of barbins may be increased.
