Small duty cycles in SETI

Abstract Up to now it has been considered that omnidirectional beacons and continuous emissions should be used to attract the attention of extraterrestrial intelligences. The case is considered here of using instead narrow beams directed consecutively to many targets, thus emitting to each target signals of short duration. A discussion on theoretical and technological consequences is presented.
