Descriptive research of knowledge, attitude and practice related to AIDS among female sex workers

2009
Objective To learn about knowledge, attitude and practice related to AIDS among female sex workers and to find out the factors related to healthy behavior. Methods A Probability Proportionate to Size Sampling(PPS)was used, and 7 913 female sex workers were visited to fill in a questionnaire. Results The average age of informants was 24.6,most of them unmarried, graduated from junior middle school. The overall awareness rate of knowledge related to AIDS defined by UNGASS was 83%(95% CI 82%~84%).The positive attitude toward those infected with HIV and familiar to them(willing to keep relationship with the infected)was 67%(95% CI 66%~68%).The healthy behavior rate(to use condoms every time when having commercial sex)was 87%(95% CI 87%~88%).Logistic regression analysis showed that education level,AIDS knowledge defined by UNGASS,AIDS knowledge about the three transmitting ways, and attitude toward PLWHA were related factors to the behavior. Conclusions Compared with the awareness of AIDS knowledge, the attitude toward PLWHA is not a great impact indicator to the healthy behavior. To change the target population's health behavior,it is necessary to strengthen health education related to AIDS,and to reduce discrimination or negative attitude, among other things.
