An iterative algorithm for adaptive element splitting using transition elements

Abstract A simple iterative algorithm is described to implement the ‘ h -adaptive’ convergence technique to two-dimensional elements with quadratic interpolation using transition elements. Examples of a thick cylinder, a thick walled sphere and a Boussinesq problem using piecewise quadratic transition elements are presented.
