Health Behavior in Children

1997
Most researchers, when viewing childhood, have focused on issues such as learning, school performance, emotional development, and family and peer relationships. Childhood is now coming to be perceived, however, as a critical period in the overall development of the individual for the acquisition of appropriate health behaviors and the assumption of a healthful lifestyle. During childhood, health behaviors develop as a function of the interaction among an individual’s developmental levels, personal characteristics, social environment, and experiences. The intent of this chapter is to provide a framework for understanding why studying children’s health behaviors is important and for recognizing that children’s health behaviors need to be considered separately from those of adults.
