Usefulness of grape seed polyphenols in the prevention of skin cancer: A mini review

2020
Abstract Skin, which is the largest organ in humans, has myriad roles and is principally involved in the protection of the internal parts against the deleterious effects of various toxicants. Prolonged exposure to dermatoxic agents, especially sunlight, causes skin cancer, with higher incidences in white-skinned and genetically susceptible individuals. Cancer prevention is always a preferred means and the use of agents called chemopreventive/cancer preventive agents that are safe, affordable, and effective is being investigated. Numerous studies have validated that plant-based phytochemicals that possess antiinflammatory, antioxidative, antiproliferative, immune-stimulating, and antiangiogenic properties are useful in the prevention of skin cancer and that the polyphenols present in grape seeds, a byproduct of wineries, are useful. This review addresses the scientific evidence presented on the aspect in the recent past by also focusing on the mechanism of action.
